The SM916-S ProGuard is a DOT and ECE E13 dual-certified full-face helmet built around four features that distinguish it from uncertified alternatives: independently verified safety to both US and European standards; a built-in retractable brown mirror inner visor that eliminates the need to carry a tinted visor separately; a three-point ventilation circuit (chin intake, crown circulation, rear exhaust) that moves air actively rather than relying on gaps; and a removable, washable inner liner. Net weight 1,580g across six sizes S to XXXL in eleven colour options.
- ECE E13 certifies both the helmet shell AND the visor lens separately: Most helmets list a single ECE certification for the shell. The SM916-S carries ECE E13 certification for both the helmet and the inner brown mirror lens independently — the lens has been tested to European optical and impact standards in addition to the shell. This is the most practically useful certification detail for the retractable visor: the lens meets ECE requirements for use as the primary vision field during riding, not just as a sunglasses-type accessory.
- DOT certification — self-declaration, not pre-market independent testing: DOT (US FMVSS 218) allows manufacturers to self-certify compliance — no independent laboratory is required before the helmet reaches the market. ECE E13 requires pre-market independent testing. The SM916-S carries both, with the ECE certification providing the independently verified baseline. For riders in ECE-regulated markets, the ECE certification is the legally relevant standard; DOT provides US market access.
- Retractable brown mirror visor — retract before low-light riding: The built-in inner visor is a tinted mirror lens — it reduces light transmission by design. At dusk, in tunnels, and at night, retract it fully before riding. Confirm the lever snaps to the fully retracted detent; a visor that does not lock retracted can drift downward from road vibration in low-light conditions. The ECE E13 lens certification means it meets optical quality standards for road use when deployed — use it confidently in daylight.
- Removable, washable liner — wash cold, air dry only: The inner liner is fully removable for washing — an advantage over non-removable liners in helmets used year-round. Remove the liner after each heavy-perspiration ride and wash cold on a gentle cycle. Air dry only — tumble drying degrades the foam backing and dimensional accuracy. A compressed or moisture-saturated liner changes the helmet's effective internal diameter and alters the skull-to-EPS contact geometry that governs energy transfer in an impact.
- Replace after any crash or hard drop — ABS shell damage is not always visible: ABS can fracture internally while the painted surface appears intact. EPS liner cellular crush is permanent and invisible without cutting the liner open. The DOT and ECE certifications apply to a new, unimpacted helmet. After any significant impact — a crash at riding speed or a drop from handlebar height onto a hard surface — replace before riding again regardless of appearance.

* Measure above the eyebrows, over the ears, and around the occipital protrusion. Take three readings; use the largest. XXL and XXXL share 63cm — at this boundary choose XXXL. Firm all-round pressure with no gaps is the correct fit. If the helmet feels comfortable immediately, it is likely one size too large.
