ProGuard Full-Face
Motorcycle Helmet

DOT + ECE E13 Certified · ABS Shell · Retractable Brown Visor · 3-Point Ventilation · 1,580g · S–XXXL

The SM916-S ProGuard is a DOT and ECE E13 dual-certified full-face helmet built around four features that distinguish it from uncertified alternatives: independently verified safety to both US and European standards; a built-in retractable brown mirror inner visor that eliminates the need to carry a tinted visor separately; a three-point ventilation circuit (chin intake, crown circulation, rear exhaust) that moves air actively rather than relying on gaps; and a removable, washable inner liner. Net weight 1,580g across six sizes S to XXXL in eleven colour options.

  • ECE E13 certifies both the helmet shell AND the visor lens separately: Most helmets list a single ECE certification for the shell. The SM916-S carries ECE E13 certification for both the helmet and the inner brown mirror lens independently — the lens has been tested to European optical and impact standards in addition to the shell. This is the most practically useful certification detail for the retractable visor: the lens meets ECE requirements for use as the primary vision field during riding, not just as a sunglasses-type accessory.
  • DOT certification — self-declaration, not pre-market independent testing: DOT (US FMVSS 218) allows manufacturers to self-certify compliance — no independent laboratory is required before the helmet reaches the market. ECE E13 requires pre-market independent testing. The SM916-S carries both, with the ECE certification providing the independently verified baseline. For riders in ECE-regulated markets, the ECE certification is the legally relevant standard; DOT provides US market access.
  • Retractable brown mirror visor — retract before low-light riding: The built-in inner visor is a tinted mirror lens — it reduces light transmission by design. At dusk, in tunnels, and at night, retract it fully before riding. Confirm the lever snaps to the fully retracted detent; a visor that does not lock retracted can drift downward from road vibration in low-light conditions. The ECE E13 lens certification means it meets optical quality standards for road use when deployed — use it confidently in daylight.
  • Removable, washable liner — wash cold, air dry only: The inner liner is fully removable for washing — an advantage over non-removable liners in helmets used year-round. Remove the liner after each heavy-perspiration ride and wash cold on a gentle cycle. Air dry only — tumble drying degrades the foam backing and dimensional accuracy. A compressed or moisture-saturated liner changes the helmet's effective internal diameter and alters the skull-to-EPS contact geometry that governs energy transfer in an impact.
  • Replace after any crash or hard drop — ABS shell damage is not always visible: ABS can fracture internally while the painted surface appears intact. EPS liner cellular crush is permanent and invisible without cutting the liner open. The DOT and ECE certifications apply to a new, unimpacted helmet. After any significant impact — a crash at riding speed or a drop from handlebar height onto a hard surface — replace before riding again regardless of appearance.
DOTApproved
US FMVSS 218 Manufacturer self-declaration against US Department of Transportation standards — required for road use across North America. Covers impact attenuation, penetration resistance, retention system, and field of vision. No pre-market independent testing is required under DOT.
ECEE13 — Helmet & Lens
Pre-Market Independent Testing ECE E13 requires an independent laboratory to verify the helmet before sale. Critically, the SM916-S carries ECE E13 for both the ABS shell and the retractable brown inner visor lens — the lens has been independently tested for optical quality, UV resistance, and impact resistance. Confirm the ECE revision (R22.05 or R22.06) with the seller.
Three-Point Ventilation Circuit
💨
Chin Bar Intake
Fresh air enters at the front mouth vent — channelled upward and inward across the liner surface. At speeds above ~40km/h, aerodynamic pressure drives a meaningful airflow volume through this intake.
⬆️
Crown Circulation
Top crown vents allow the intake air to circulate across the EPS and liner from front to rear. The duct geometry determines how much air reaches the crown zone — the area with the highest heat concentration during riding.
🌀
Rear Exhaust
Tail exhaust ports use the low-pressure wake behind the helmet at speed to draw warm air outward. The exhaust function improves significantly above 60km/h where the aerodynamic pressure differential is sufficient to drive active extraction.
Feature Performance
🧱
ABS Shell + EPS — Sequential Impact Response
The ABS outer shell spreads impact force laterally across its surface before transferring it to the EPS (expanded polystyrene) liner beneath. The EPS absorbs energy through irreversible cellular crush — it cannot recover and cannot be re-used after a significant impact. The ABS shell's load-spreading function requires it to remain structurally intact; an internal fracture from any significant impact eliminates this function even when the exterior appears undamaged. "No neck pressure design" in the specification refers to the shell weight and geometry being balanced to reduce forward-tilt torque on the cervical spine during riding posture.
🕶️
Brown Mirror Visor — Optical and Practical Notes
The retractable inner visor is a brown-tinted mirror lens — the brown tint improves contrast in hazy and partially overcast conditions by filtering blue-spectrum light, which is distinct from grey tinting (which reduces all wavelengths equally). Mirror coating on the interior face reduces glare at low sun angles. The visor sits inside the clear outer lens — it is not exposed to wind, debris, or rain and does not require the perimeter sealing that the outer clear lens gasket provides. Keep the inner lens surface free of fingerprints; clean with a soft cloth and water only.
🔓
Quick Release Buckle — Emergency Access
The push-button quick-release buckle is the system emergency responders use to remove a helmet without rotating or lifting it — critical if spinal injury is suspected after a crash. Test the buckle's retention monthly: fasten it, grip both strap sections below the buckle, and apply firm pull force. If the buckle releases without pressing the tab, the internal spring has fatigued and the buckle requires replacement before riding. A fatigued buckle that appears correctly fastened can release under crash deceleration forces.
🧽
Removable Liner — Why It Matters Beyond Comfort
The removable liner serves a safety function in addition to comfort and hygiene: liner compression from accumulated sweat and oils increases the effective internal diameter of the helmet over time, reducing the skull-to-EPS contact that governs energy transfer in an impact. A non-removable liner cannot be washed effectively, allowing compression to progress without intervention. The SM916-S liner is fully removable — washing restores the foam's loft and the dimensional accuracy that governs fit. A helmet that felt tight at purchase but feels looser after several months of use has a compressed liner.
📐
Sizing — Measurement and the XXL/XXXL Overlap
Measure head circumference above the eyebrows, over the ears, and around the occipital protrusion at the rear — three measurements, use the largest. The SM916-S size chart shows XXL at 62–63cm and XXXL at 63–64cm; at exactly 63cm both sizes overlap. If trying on is not possible, choose XXXL at the boundary — the removable liner can be replaced with a thicker version to reduce interior diameter if the fit is marginally loose, while a shell that is genuinely tight cannot be adjusted. Firm all-round pressure with no gaps is the correct fit; comfortable immediately usually means one size too large.
⚖️
1,580g Net Weight — Context
At 1,580g net, the SM916-S sits at the lower end of the ABS full-face weight range — most ABS full-face helmets run 1,400–1,800g. The weight is carried entirely on the head and neck in riding posture; 200g difference in helmet weight produces a measurable difference in neck muscle fatigue over a 2-hour ride at highway speed because the aerodynamic load on the shell amplifies the effective weight. The 500g difference between net (1,580g) and gross (2,080g) packaging weight is the box, inner bag, and wrapping — the helmet itself is what's worn.

* Measure above the eyebrows, over the ears, and around the occipital protrusion. Take three readings; use the largest. XXL and XXXL share 63cm — at this boundary choose XXXL. Firm all-round pressure with no gaps is the correct fit. If the helmet feels comfortable immediately, it is likely one size too large.
