- DOT approval — what FMVSS 218 tests and what it does not: DOT certification (FMVSS 218) requires the manufacturer to test and self-certify impact attenuation, penetration resistance, and retention system strength. It is a self-declaration standard — helmets are spot-checked by regulators after market, not independently certified at the point of manufacture. DOT is the U.S. minimum legal road standard. It does not cover peripheral vision angle, noise, or chin bar impact — those are tested under ECE 22.06 (European) and SNELL. This helmet is DOT only; confirm whether additional certification is required for your riding jurisdiction.
- ABS vs polycarbonate vs fibreglass — where ABS sits in the shell hierarchy: ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is an injection-moulded thermoplastic. It is heavier than polycarbonate at equivalent thickness and significantly heavier than fibreglass or carbon fibre composite shells, but it is less expensive to manufacture and provides adequate impact distribution for DOT-level protection. At approximately 1300g, this helmet sits in the mid-weight range for full-face ABS helmets. Riders doing long highway distances may notice neck fatigue compared to composite-shell helmets in the 1000–1200g range.
- EPS liner — single-impact material, replace after any significant impact: The EPS liner permanently deforms under impact to absorb energy — this is its intended function and cannot be reset. A helmet that has experienced a significant impact must be replaced even if the outer shell shows no visible damage. EPS also degrades with UV exposure, sweat absorption, and petroleum-based cleaning products. Do not use solvent cleaners on the interior. Replace this helmet every 5 years from date of manufacture regardless of impacts — EPS loses impact-absorbing capacity over time even without visible degradation.
- Quick-release buckle — engagement check before every ride: The quick-release system allows one-handed fastening and rapid removal — useful in emergency situations where first responders need to remove the helmet. The buckle should produce an audible click on full engagement. A partially engaged buckle can release under chin-strap load in a crash — check for full engagement and zero strap play before riding. After washing or removal, re-engage the buckle before storing the helmet.

* Measure head circumference 1cm above the eyebrow line around the widest point of the skull. Measure three times and use the largest reading. If between sizes, choose the larger. A correctly fitted helmet feels snug with even pressure all round and moves no more than 1–2cm sideways with the chin strap fastened. Note: this range starts at M (57cm) — riders with heads below 57cm should confirm with the seller whether an S size is available.
