Motorcycle
Riding Pants

CE2 Level 2 Knee Pads · 3M Thinsulate · Y-MAG Magnetic Closure · Waterproof · Windproof · Active Stretch · S–5XL

The VP-201 is VEMAR's all-season motorcycle riding pant built around three features that distinguish it from basic riding trousers: CE Level 2 knee certification (the highest CE level for knee protectors — not Level 1), 3M Thinsulate Xerogel insulation derived from 3M space technology delivering double thermal retention at 20× the breathability of conventional lining, and Y-MAG magnetic quick-closure for gloved entry and exit without zipper fumbling. Outer shell is 92% Polyester + 8% Spandex with Cordura technology — waterproof, windproof, quick-dry, anti-UV, flame-retardant. S to 5XL, 1.0kg.

  • CE Level 2 knee pads — the highest CE knee certification, not the baseline: EN 1621-1 CE certification for knee protectors has two levels. CE Level 1 (transmitted force ≤35kN average) is the standard for most motorcycle jean and trouser knee pads. CE Level 2 (transmitted force ≤20kN average) is the more protective standard — it requires the pad to transmit significantly less force than Level 1. The VP-201 includes CE2 Level 2 pads, which puts it in the upper tier of the riding trouser market. The pads are 32cm in height — confirm this fits your knee pocket geometry before removing the pads for separate use.
  • Y-MAG magnetic closure — how it works and why it matters: Y-MAG is a magnetic quick-closure system that supplements the zipper fly — the magnetic closure holds the waistband together with a snap-in alignment mechanism that does not require threading a button through a loop or sliding a zipper tab with precision. This is particularly useful when donning the trousers over motorcycle boots while wearing gloves, where fine-motor button work is difficult. After fitting, pull the full side-opening zip from the ankle upward with the waistband magnetic closure secured. Remove in reverse: unsnap the magnetic closure first, then unzip from waist to ankle.
  • 3M Thinsulate Xerogel — what distinguishes it from standard insulation: Standard insulation traps still air in fibre voids to create a thermal barrier. 3M Thinsulate Xerogel uses nanoporous silica aerogel particles — the same gas-condensate material developed for thermal protection in aerospace applications — which trap air at a structural level within the silica matrix. The result is thermal retention (warmth) at a much lower loft (thickness) than fibre insulation, with the pores remaining open to allow moisture vapour transmission. The "20× more breathable" claim refers to vapour permeability compared to conventional closed-cell insulation, not compared to no insulation. It contains 60% post-consumer recycled content.
  • Waterproof rating not stated — confirm before heavy-rain use: The VP-201 is described as waterproof and windproof but no hydrostatic head rating (MMH2O) is listed. The 92% Polyester shell with Cordura technology provides structural water resistance but without a stated rating the performance level in sustained heavy rain is unconfirmed. The 3M Thinsulate lining will absorb moisture if water reaches it through sustained ingress — once saturated the Thinsulate's thermal performance is significantly reduced until dried. For extended heavy-rain riding, confirm the waterproof rating with the seller or use an over-trouser.
  • Size chart — Front Wave and Back Wave columns explained: The chart includes two columns not commonly seen in riding trouser sizing: "Front Wave" is the front rise measurement (waistband to crotch seam, front face) and "Back Wave" is the back rise (waistband to crotch seam, rear face). Back rise is always longer than front rise on correctly constructed riding trousers — the additional length allows the trouser seat to extend without pulling the waistband down when seated in a forward-lean riding position. If the S row shows Front Wave as 28.5cm — which is significantly shorter than M (44.5cm) — this may be a data entry error; confirm S dimensions with the seller before ordering that size.
3M Thinsulate Technology

3M Xerogel — Nanoporous Gas-Condensate Insulation (3M Space Technology Origin)

Double the warmth at the same thickness Nanoporous silica aerogel particles trap air at the structural level within the silica matrix — achieving higher thermal retention per millimetre of loft than conventional fibre insulation. You get the warmth of a thicker lining at significantly lower bulk.
20× more breathable than conventional insulation The "20×" figure compares vapour permeability against closed-cell insulation, not against no insulation. The open nanopore structure allows moisture vapour (perspiration) to pass through the lining and escape through the outer shell — preventing the clamminess that accumulates inside conventional closed-cell linings during active riding.
Lightweight — minimal added bulk Because aerogel achieves insulation through nanopore geometry rather than fibre loft, the lining adds minimal weight and bulk relative to its thermal performance. The VP-201's 1.0kg gross weight includes the Thinsulate lining and CE2 knee pads — competitive for a fully insulated and CE-padded riding trouser.
60% post-consumer recycled content · Easy care 60% of the Thinsulate material is post-consumer recycled fibre. Care: machine washable on gentle cycle, do not tumble dry at high heat — heat degrades the aerogel particle bonding. Air dry or tumble on low heat only.
Feature Performance
🧱
92% Polyester + 8% Spandex + Cordura — Shell Construction
Cordura is a high-tenacity nylon or polyester yarn — when specified as a material technology on a polyester shell, it indicates the polyester is woven at higher denier and tighter construction than standard polyester fabric. This increases abrasion resistance, tear resistance, and dimensional stability. The 8% spandex content adds stretch that allows the shell to follow the body through the hip flex and knee extension of riding posture without the shell pulling or restricting pad pocket position. Inspect the outer shell at the seat and inner knee annually — these zones experience the most sustained abrasion from seat contact and inner-leg movement against the tank.
💧
Waterproof + Windproof — Shell vs Thinsulate Interaction
The outer shell's waterproof treatment repels water at the surface — this is the first defence layer. The windproof property comes from the tight Cordura weave blocking cold air passage through the fabric at riding speed. If the waterproof surface treatment fails under sustained rain (common at stitched seams without seam sealing), water reaching the Thinsulate lining significantly reduces its thermal performance — wet aerogel loses much of its insulating ability until dried. Hang the trousers inside-out after wet rides to allow the Thinsulate lining to dry fully before storage. Reapply DWR waterproofing spray to the shell annually.
🧲
Y-MAG Closure + Full Side Opening Zip
The full side-opening zip runs from the ankle to the hip — when opened fully, the trouser leg can be stepped into over a motorcycle boot without bending the boot shaft or removing it. This is the primary donning advantage: step in over the boot, draw the zip upward, and snap the Y-MAG magnetic waistband closure. The magnetic snap engages when the two halves are brought within approximately 2cm of each other and aligns automatically — no threading or alignment required. Test the magnetic closure retention by applying downward pull force on the waistband after snapping — if it releases with light pull, the magnet strength has degraded and should be replaced before relying on it at riding speed.
🛡️
CE2 Level 2 Pads — Pad Care and Retention
CE Level 2 pads are typically softer and more conforming than CE Level 1 hard-shell pads — Level 2 achieves its lower force transmission through higher energy absorption in the foam matrix rather than through rigidity. The 32cm pad height covers the kneecap and extends above and below the joint. Remove pads before machine washing — Level 2 foam can deform permanently at wash temperatures above 30°C. After washing and drying the trouser, re-insert and check alignment: the pad's upper edge should sit approximately 2cm above the kneecap in riding posture, not in standing posture. A Level 2 pad that has been subjected to a significant impact (hard fall) should be inspected for crush damage and replaced if visible deformation is present.
🤸
Active Stretch — Spandex Function in Riding Posture
The 8% spandex in the outer shell and the 100% Polyfibre Spandex lining both contribute stretch — the shell stretch allows the outer fabric to accommodate the hip and knee angles of riding posture without tenting or pulling, while the lining stretch allows the inner surface to move with the body independently of the shell. In riding posture, the hip joint opens by approximately 30–40° compared to standing, and the knee flexes to approximately 90°. A non-stretch riding trouser in both these dimensions pulls the waistband downward and the knee panel upward when seated. The combined stretch prevents both of these fit problems. Set the waist adjustment in riding posture, not standing.
📐
Sizing — Full Waist Circumferences + S Size Anomaly
The chart's waist column uses full body circumferences (86cm at S through 120cm at 5XL) — these match the body directly without the half-waist conversion needed for some other riding trouser charts. A standard 34-inch waist (approximately 86cm) corresponds to S in this chart — notably, this trouser runs larger than typical riding jeans. The S row's Front Wave value (28.5cm) appears significantly lower than M (44.5cm) — this is likely a data entry error rather than a genuine dimensional difference. Contact the seller to confirm S-size front rise before purchasing S if that measurement is relevant to your fit. All other S dimensions (length, waist, hip) scale normally from M.

How to size: Match your body waist circumference directly to the Waist column — these are full measurements in cm. A standard 34-inch waist (≈86cm) = S; note this trouser runs larger than typical riding jeans. Front Rise and Back Rise (formerly "Front/Back Wave") are crotch-to-waistband measurements: back rise is longer than front rise to accommodate the forward-lean riding position without pulling the waistband down. The S-size Front Rise value (28.5cm) appears anomalous compared to M (44.5cm) — confirm with the seller if ordering S. Tolerance ±1–2cm. If between sizes, choose the larger.
